Spa is the name of a small, fashionable health location in Belgium, whose mineral springs have been visited by Briths tourists since the 16th Century. The word became established in the 17th Century in the British Isles, first to designate mineral sources. From the mid-20th Century, the concept prevailed in American English for spas in general. Today "spa" is internationally used as a generic term for health and wellness facilities and especially for the bath and wet  hotels areas in common. The origin of the word is often interpreted as a derivation from the Latin, as an abbreviation for "sanus per aquam" (health by water).
